Marine Science Semester Program Scholarship for 2024-2025

The CRAG scholarships are funded by NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program through the American Samoa Government as part of the ongoing efforts to build local capacity in American Samoa. The scholarship is a competitive, merit-based scholarship that provides opportunities for current or past American Samoa Community College students pursuing a Bachelor's or graduate degree at a four-year university majoring in Marine Science or a related field.

The American Samoa Community College Marine Science Program Scholarship supports students seeking college or graduate degrees in marine science or a related field. Recipients will be selected based on merit, GPA, research experience, community service, brief essays, and letters of recommendation. Financial support for $5,000 will be provided to two (2) recipients each fall and spring semester in 2023-2024. The scholarship is intended to support students throughout their academic journey both financially as well as by connecting students with a mentor. The mentor will support the scholar during their academic career and assist them in transitioning to the workplace upon graduation.

Application Checklist:

1. Complete application

2. Twenty hours of documented community service consisting of climate change resilience outreach and recruitment for the ASCC marine science program. Use the community service tracking form provided to document hours.

3. Two letters of recommendation – please have referees email them to KelleyAT@hawaii.edu

4. Official transcripts.

5. A typed essay explaining what inspires you, your interest in marine science, and your career/educational goals in 300-500 words.

Eligibility requirements: (eligibility criteria remain the same whether applicants are in AS or not)

1. Must be a current or former American Samoa Community College Marine Science Program student.

2. Must be accepted to a four-year university or graduate program with the intention of majoring in marine science or a related field.

3. Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.

4. Must be willing to participate in monthly mentor check-ins and provide two virtual outreach talks with a school in American Samoa to support the Coral Reef Advisory Group's Education and Outreach Specialist's program.

5. Must be willing to conduct twenty hours of community service before application.
